Zooming In and Out in Your Internet Browser

Help, this webpage is too small to read! Who hasn't experienced this before? This article includes the quick fix to this common problem and how to use your browser's zoom function to your benefit.

It happens to everyone at some point. Your internet browser is showing you too small or too large of a website. It’s just because you accidentally zoomed in or out, and now have to figure out how to get it back. No worries. As long as you can still read this article, it will walk you through getting it back to normal and using your zoom features to better your experience. We are going to focus on Firefox and Chrome.

Quick Zoom Correct in Firefox

One click is all you need to return your view to 100% in Firefox.

If the website you’re viewing isn’t at 100% it will tell you at the top of Firefox right in your address bar. If you just want to flip it back to 100%, click the percentage button. Easy peasy.

Just hold the keys highlighted in orange to return the zoom to default.

There is also a keyboard shortcut. Hold down ctrl and 0 (that’s a zero not an oh) to bring it back to normal.

Quick Zoom Correct in Chrome

The fastest way to correct back to 100% in Chrome is to use the keyboard shortcut. Hold ctrl and 0 (zero) to make your page regular size again.

If you don’t like keyboard shortcuts, the alternative is just one extra step. Click the magnifying glass in the right of your address bar and click reset. Voila, your zoom is back to normal.

Using Zoom on Purpose

Maybe you want to make a page bigger so you can see details or read words more easily. Perhaps instead you want to zoom out and view more of the page at once. In any case, the zoom feature was made to be more than something you have to correct. Here’s how to use it properly.

Zooming in or out on Firefox and Chrome

The keyboard above shows where to find the keys for this keyboard shortcut.

To zoom in, you can use a keyboard shortcut. Just hold control and the plus button at the end of your number keys.

There is also a keyboard shortcut for zooming out. Hold control and the minus key located just next to the plus key.

You can also do a combination of the ctrl key on the keyboard and your scroll wheel on your mouse.

Firefox and Chrome have some different user experiences but the zoom function is in relatively the same location.

Lastly, you can navigate to the zoom setting with your mouse alone by going to the dot dot dot in Chrome or the hamburger icon in Firefox. Midway down those options is the zoom controller. Press the plus or minus icons to adjust your view.

Make the Most of Zoom

Now that you are versed in how to use zoom, think of ways it can make your browsing experience easier. View websites however it is most comfortable for you to see them. Zoom in or out with ease!

From now on, if you hear anyone ask “why is this site so tiny?” you have the knowhow to fix it.
